Overview

Ever wished you could slice and dice 🗡️ your performance review data to spot talent trends, measure employee engagement, or track potential across teams, all with a few breezy clicks? 🍃 Then let's talk about question tags!

Tags are simple words or short phrases that you can attach to questions in review templates. They work behind the scenes to categorise questions into bubbles that are meaningful to a certain area or 'topic' of performance. Think categories like 'impact,' 'potential,' 'leadership,' and 'communication.'

In Indigo’s Performance Management, tags act like labels that make questions easier to filter through by topic. They're also crucial when you analyse key aspects of employee performance through insightful graphs and reports. Whether you’re a manager or the HR admin, smart use of tags ultimately means clearer, more powerful analytics to guide your talent decisions.

Using Question Tags Effectively

Simply put, when you use tags, you're utilising a system that helps you quickly filter, compare, and understand performance data by themes that matter to your organisation.

  • Tagging Questions: every question can have one or more tags. These tags then become available as measurement values in Indigo’s analytics graphs.

  • Tags via Sections: add tags at the section level so they automatically apply to all questions within that section, saving you time and ensuring consistency.

  • Cross-Template Consistency: tags carry over within review templates, creating uniform categories across your entire company.

  • Powering Analytics: when you generate graphs (like the 9-box grid), you'll need to set parameters; what are you measuring on both axes? The answer can be found in a list that Indigo compiles automatically from all question tags saved in every template in your company—whether added directly to questions or inherited from sections—to give you comprehensive insights.

🪓 Beware! Tagging without a strategy chops effectiveness.

Imagine your company wants to track 'leadership' across all departments. If some questions are tagged 'team leader' while others use 'leadership,' your analytics will treat these as different categories, while they essentially mean the same thing! This splits your data and weakens the insights you can draw.

Consistency is key. We highly recommend that the HR admin or a chosen delegate dedicates some time to setting a standard for your company's tags, and makes sure managers and others who may be building templates stick to them. This prevents redundant or fragmented categories and keeps your analytics sharp.

Adding and Removing Question Tags

Tags are assigned directly to questions, and each question can have multiple tags. Additionally, template sections can be set to apply specific tags to all questions within them.

📑 Note

When a question moves across sections:

  • Tags added directly to the question stay with it.

  • Tags inherited from the old section are removed.

  • The question adopts the tags from its new section automatically.

To set up sectional question tags:

  1. In Performance Management > Templates, open or start a new template.

  2. Over in the Template Builder, create a new section or edit an existing one.

  3. Add tags in the Tags field.

    • ⚠️ Important: press Enter after each tag to apply it. A tag that's just text without a curved, coloured background will not be included and needs to be 'entered'.

To add a tag to a specific question:

  1. While creating or editing a question, scroll down to the Additional Options section.

  2. Add tags in the Question Tags field.

    • 📑 Note: tags inherited from the section are not displayed here, but still apply behind the scenes.

To remove tags from sections and questions:

  1. Re-enter the respective editing screens.

  2. Click on the Question Tags field.

  3. Delete all text until the tag(s) disappear(s).

This will only remove the tag from that section or question. The tag will remain in your company's Performance Management module as long as it is used anywhere at least once.

⚠️ Important: don't forget to always save changes to your sections and questions, and the whole template when you're done editing.

🔍 Easy tracking

You can easily check which tags are active in several places within the Templates section:

  • For sectional tags: in the Edit Section screen, they remain highlighted as when they were being created.

  • For question-specific tags: at the bottom of each question's card within the template builder.

  • For tags across the entire template: in the template builder, by hovering to the tag symbol in the top left corner.
