Evaluating Occupations in JET

Once the company profile is set up and the criteria are in place, it’s time to dive into the core of the job evaluation tool ... occupation evaluations! You can do this manually or let JET's AI do the heavy lifting, but always review.

Overview

Setting up your company profile and criteria in Indigo's Job Evaluation Tool (JET) is just the starter, not the main course. The crunchiest part of the meal is in fact (as the tool's name suggests) the occupation evaluations. Let’s roll up our sleeves and dig in! 🍴

Occupation evaluations take place in the tab of the same name, found under Indigo › HR › Job Evaluation Tool. This screen automatically displays a grid populated by all the occupations currently set up for your company in Indigo › HR › Occupations. By default, and until each occupation is evaluated, the grid will show:

  • Evaluation Score: 0

  • Status: Not Started

  • Occupation Category: N/A

Your goal on this screen is to evaluate, or score, each occupation using the criteria that was set earlier in the Evaluation Profile tab. Once an occupation is evaluated, JET then automatically calculates a score and recommends a wage range that reflects the role’s value within your organisation.

💡📖 Tip: These scores are also how jobs will get sorted into different categories, but more on that in this article!

🧠 Heads-up! This part of the JET process can be daunting and it's easy to fall into certain biases, particularly if you're doing it manually without the help of JET's AI. A good trick is to keep in mind that, while evaluating, the question you're constantly answering is going to be:

“For this specific occupation (e.g. Head Chef), which level (option) of this factor (e.g. Technical Expertise) best applies?”

If you're evaluating the occupation Head Chef for your hotel business, the answer is going to be the top option, which likely sounds something like this:

"80 | Knows advanced techniques."

Evaluating an Occupation

In JET you can evaluate occupations manually or with AI. Either way and especially with AI-generated results, you or an assigned colleague must review the outcome. AI is helpful, but it is not perfect, while human evaluations can carry biases.

Done correctly, 💯 each evaluated occupation will update in the grid with:

  • A job evaluation score.

  • An occupation category.

  • Status change to:

    • In Progress if partially saved.

    • Completed when an option has been picked for every factor in every section.

The steps below explain the manual method first, which will also help you understand and review generated scores if you're using AI. AI instructions can be found at the end.

Manual Scoring

The process is similar to completing a multiple-choice questionnaire. Each factor in a section represents the question, while the options are the possible answers, all as defined in the criteria in the Evaluation Profile tab.

To begin the process, click the blue ✏️ Edit Occupation Evaluation button beside the occupation you want to evaluate.

This will open a screen from the side, with the following layout:

  • At the top of the panel (marked red in the screenshot below), you will see:

    1. The occupation title (top-left).

    2. The evaluation score out of 1,000 (top-right), initially 0/1000. Every part of the evaluation you complete, the score will begin to climb up toward 1,000.

    3. A View Occupation Description button (blue button with a white document and magnifying glass); useful to check scope, responsibilities, and expectations before deciding on factor levels.

      • ⚠️ Note: the occupation description shown when clicking this button is also pulled from the Indigo › HR › Occupations screen, specifically the Further Description field available in the form view. This description is crucial for JET to understand what the occupation is about, and affects AI evaluations. Learn more.

  • In the central part of the screen, below the header (orange) is information regarding sections, factors and criteria.

    1. A Section dropdown allows you to choose the section you want to work on (e.g. Skills, Responsibility, Effort, Working Conditions; all based on your criteria setup).

    2. When a section is chosen in the dropdown, it will be shown in the blue ribbon below, and you’ll see all its factors with the options in the main part of the screen.

    3. For easy, looped navigation between sections, use the Next and Previous buttons in the blue header.

    4. Should you wish to start over, you can reset this occupation's evaluation using the button with the brush. 🖌️

  • At the bottom (blue), two progress bars will also begin to fill up as you proceed with scoring:

    1. This section tracks your progress with the currently chosen section.

    2. This job evaluation tracks your overall progress with the occupation.

Once you have familiarised yourself with the open edit screen:

  1. Select the correct option for each factor. Base your selection purely on the occupation’s requirements, not any current employees' capabilities.

    • For example:

      • A Commis (junior) Chef may align with a more entry-level technical skill option.

      • A Head Chef should align with options describing advanced culinary mastery and leadership.

  2. Do this for every factor in every section.

  3. Once any progress has been made:

    • Click Save to store your work and return later.

    • Click Cancel to discard changes made during the current editing session

Generating Scores with AI

  1. Click the blue ✏️ Edit Occupation Evaluation button in the grid to the far right of the occupation you want to evaluate.

  2. In the screen that opens, click the orange Generate score with AI button, at the top-right.

  3. Wait for the process to finish and the loading screen with helpful tips ✨ to disappear.

  4. Review and adjust anything that needs correcting.

  5. Read and tick the orange 'generated by AI' notice at the bottom of the screen.

  6. Click the blue Save button in the bottom right to confirm the evaluation.

💡 Tip 1: Whether you're generating scores with AI, evaluating manually, or mixing, you'll need to repeat this process for every occupation in the grid.

📖 Tip 2: Not exactly sure what the AI is doing, or do you need to confirm what to look out for while reviewing evaluations? Jump to the previous section. ⬆️

Export and Other Functions

The Occupation Evaluation screen includes several features designed to make your work easier.

  • The standout is the blue Export button:

    • Select an evaluated occupation and click Export to generate a preview, which you can download and share as a PDF!

  • You’ll also find a search bar and filter options to help with navigation.

All of these tools are conveniently available in the top-right corner of the screen.
