About the Salary Calculator Page

The Shireburn Malta Salary Calculator page is split into two main areas:

  • The Malta Salary Calculator section on the left, where you can enter salary information and adjust different calculation options.

  • The Payslip Preview section on the right, where you'll instantly see how the entered information affects earnings, deductions, and net pay.

1️⃣ Malta Salary Calculator Section

Enter salary details and customise the calculation to match your own circumstances and help you generate a more accurate salary estimate. At the top of this section there are three fields:

  • Tax Year: the tax year referring to the salary, tax, and statutory values calculation. Calculations change depending on the selected year's regulations.

  • Gross Salary: the total pay earned before any deductions.

  • Choose the period the gross amount is based on—per Year, Month, 4 Weeks, 2 Weeks, Week, and Hour.

Moving down, there are four collapsible sections: Tax & Bonus Details, Overtime, Other Earnings, and Employer.

Tax & Bonus Details

In this section you can tailor the calculation to your employment and tax situation using the following fields:

  • Tax Profile: select your tax category based on your family situation, such as Single, Married No Children, or Parent. This affects how much income tax is deducted from your salary.

  • Apprentice/Student SSC Rates: select this option if you're 18 or older, and employed as an apprentice or full-time student under a definite contract and qualify for reduced SSC rates. This affects the Social Security Contributions used to calculate your estimated net pay.

    • Enable this together with Under 18 to apply further reduced SSC rates for full-time students under 18 years of age.

  • The following options are shown only when the entered gross salary and employee details qualify for the relevant Social Security Contribution category:

    • Under 18 (selected alone): select this option if you are under 18 years of age and are not a student.

    • 10% SSC (Cat B): select this option to calculate SSC at 10% of the actual weekly wage instead of the standard fixed Category B contribution.

    • Born before 1962: select this option if you were born before 1st January 1962. Different Social Security Contribution rules and categories apply depending on how much an employee born before this date earns.

  • Government Bonus: select to include the statutory government bonuses paid to eligible employees in Malta. You'll receive it on top of your regular salary at specific times of the year.

  • Bonus Weekly Hours: enter the weekly hours used to calculate the statutory government bonus for employees working fixed hours. A higher or lower number of hours adjusts the bonus amount included in the calculator's estimate.

🧠 Good-To-Know: Your SSC Category

Depending on the options you select, the calculator applies a specific Social Security Contribution (SSC) category. The applicable category is displayed in the Payslip Preview, next to Social Security Contribution under Government Deductions.

Overtime

Use this section to estimate how overtime could increase your annual earnings and net pay. The available overtime rates are:

  • Overtime Hours @ 1.0 (yearly): total yearly overtime hours paid at the employee's standard hourly rate.

  • Overtime Hours @ 1.5 (yearly): total yearly overtime hours paid at 1.5 times the employee's standard hourly rate.

  • Overtime Hours @ 2.0 (yearly): total yearly overtime hours paid at 2 times the employee's standard hourly rate.

Other Earnings

Here you can include additional earnings or adjustments outside the main salary to the overall salary calculation, such as:

  • Car Cash Allowance (yearly): the annual cash allowance paid instead of providing a company car. Up to €2,340 per year, 50% of this amount is exempt from tax.

  • Pre-Tax Adjustments (yearly): annual amounts added to or deducted from your salary before tax is calculated, affecting your taxable income (E.g. Allowances, commissions, and bonuses).

  • Post-Tax Adjustments (yearly): annual amounts added to or deducted from your salary after tax and SSC have been calculated, affecting your final pay (E.g. Union fees, donations, and reimbursements).

Employer

Enable the Employer Cost Breakdown switch to include the Employer Cost section to the Payslip Preview. Click ➡️ here to read more about the Employer Cost section.

2️⃣ Payslip Preview Section

This section helps you understand how the entered salary is transformed into estimated net pay as per the options in the Malta Salary Calculator section. You'll see a detailed breakdown of earnings, deductions, and net pay. Below are the specifics:

  • Earnings: a breakdown of all income included in the calculation, like your basic salary, bonuses, allowances, and any pre-tax adjustments.

  • Total Earnings: the total amount earned before any deductions are applied.

  • Government Deductions: a breakdown of the applicable Social Security Contributions and Income Tax deductions.

  • Total Government Deductions: the combined value of all government deductions. The applicable tax percentage is also displayed based on the gross salary entered.

  • Post-Tax Adjustments additional amounts added to or deducted from the pay after tax and SSC calculations.

  • Net Pay (Yearly): the estimated amount you take home after all deductions and adjustments.

The figures are generally calculated per year, but it's also possible to display them per Month, 4 Weeks, 2 Weeks, and Week using the Show Figures per dropdown in the top right corner.

Desired Net Pay and Compare to Market

The Salary Calculator can help with more than salary calculations. It can also help you prepare for salary negotiations and evaluate whether a job offer is competitive.

Below the Net Pay value are two options:

  • Click here to enter the desired net pay

  • Compare to Market

Entering the Desired Net Pay

This option is particularly useful when preparing for a job interview or a salary discussion. Instead of guessing the gross salary you should ask for, select Click here to enter the desired net pay and enter the amount you would like to take home each year.

The calculator then works backwards and automatically updates the Payslip Preview to show the gross salary required to achieve that net amount, helping you set realistic salary expectations before negotiating an offer.

Comparing the Offer to Market

If you received a job offer but you're wondering whether the proposed salary is competitive, then this option is for you.

Select Compare to Market to compare the calculated salary against current market data for similar roles.

In the window that opens, select the relevant Industry, enter the Job Title and your Email Address, then select Request report.

You will receive a personalised Salary Benchmark Report by email showing how the specified salary compares with market trends for the selected role in percentage, helping you understand whether the offer is below, in line with, or above the market rate for that position.

Employer Cost

Are you an employer who needs to understand the full cost of employment when making recruitment decisions or assessing the budget impact of a salary?

Enable the Show Employer Cost Breakdown in the Employer collapsible section to include the Employer Cost panel at the end of the Payslip Preview.

The following as shown:

  • Employee Gross Pay: the total amount earned by the employee before any deductions are applied.

  • Employer SSC: the Social Security Contribution that the employer is required to pay for the employee. It's not deducted from the employee's salary.

  • Maternity Leave Fund: a statutory employer contribution towards Malta's Maternity Leave Trust Fund. It doesn't affect the employee's net pay.

  • Employer Cost (Yearly): the total yearly employment cost, calculated as the employee's gross salary plus Employer SSC and Maternity Leave Fund contributions.

🤓 Now that you know your way around the Salary Calculator, fill in the fields to see your salary and related costs calculated automatically in the Payslip Preview!
